A Film Practice of Forming Relationships with the City

Walking through the city and filming.
It is also a practice of taking on and reweaving our relationship with space.

 

In this workshop, participants will reconstruct the city through filming and editing, using Hiroshima as their field of inquiry. By recording the various phenomena that emerge within the city as fragments (shots) and connecting them with one another, the city begins to take shape as a different kind of space.

 

While photography captures a moment in time, moving images inevitably carry time within them. In film, time is inseparable from the process of filming itself—a process that requires us to remain engaged with space and time, and to share them as they unfold. At the same time, it means placing oneself within the city and becoming entangled in its environment.

 

The act of filming is both autonomous and responsive. Although it is driven by one's own intentions, it is also shaped by the necessity of responding to the surrounding environment. What matters is moving back and forth between these two conditions.

 

The fragments gathered in this way are traces of relationships formed with space and time. Editing, meanwhile, is not simply a matter of linking fragments together; it is the act of reorganizing the relationships that exist between them.

 

The resulting film does not represent the city. Rather, it brings forth a space composed through the arrangement of multiple relationships. Through these filmed traces, we seek to open up new ways of perceiving urban and architectural space.

 

The workshop consists of three days.

■ Workshop Overview

 

DEMO.lab WORKSHOP brings together participants (members), tutors who support the production process, and guest critics who contribute critical perspectives during the final review.

 

Through a series of activities—including lectures, fieldwork, discussions, and editing—the workshop explores, through practice, how urban and architectural space can be perceived and how it may be generated.

 

While focusing on the city of Hiroshima, the workshop shares the Motomachi Municipal High-Rise Apartments as a common point of departure for inquiry.

Within this place, multiple layers of Hiroshima's history and time intersect. 

It condenses ways of urban living and transformation that extend from the past into the present. For this reason, taking this place as a starting point also becomes a way of thinking about Hiroshima itself.

 

At the same time, the site does not confine the workshop's activities to a single location.
Rather, it is positioned as a point of departure from which to open new perspectives for reading and understanding the city. From there, participants undertake fieldwork throughout Hiroshima, pursuing questions and interests that emerge from their own engagement with the city.

 

The workshop concludes with a public final review, where the completed films will be shared and discussed, opening up new perspectives on urban and architectural space.
